Cynthia Harris Peavy

Cynthia was born April 29, 1929, to Marion Hadley Harris and William Harris, in Charleston, SC, William’s hometown. The Harrises settled in (Port) Hueneme, CA, and were one of the few African-American families in the area. Soon her sister Betty and brother Glen were born. Sadly, Glen died at 5 years old from complications from a surgery. The family moved to Oxnard, CA when Cynthia was 8 years old. Cynthia had been dedicated to the Lord as an infant, and she gave her life to Christ at a young age. Cynthia graduated from Oxnard High School and attended Ventura College and San Jose State University. Cynthia married Louis Andrew Peavy in 1953 and settled in Los Angeles, and gave birth to 4 children, son Roderick, daughter Karin, son Trent and daughter Angela. In 1965 Louis suffered an accident at work that disabled him. After 13 years as a homemaker, Cynthia found it necessary to look for full-time work. She was hired by the U.S. Postal Service where she spent nearly 30 years. Louis passed away in 1978; 11 years later, her oldest son Roderick passed away. Cynthia joined Crenshaw Christian Center in the 1970’s where she enjoyed many activities and friends, including organized trips to Europe and the Bahamas. She also travelled to Mexico and to Europe a 2nd time. At home, she enjoyed reading her Bible, watching cowboy movies and going out to eat. Cynthia is survived by her children, Karin, Trent and Angela, granddaughters Ondria and Arianna, great-grandchildren David and Aaliyah, brother-in-law Payne Green, daughter-in-law Sonya, and many nieces and nephews.
