Kristine W. Niemann
July 31, 1940 – March 10, 2021
On March 10, 2021, Kristine Waaland Niemann, loving wife and mother of three, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 in Pittsburgh, PA. Kris was born July 31, 1940 in New York, NY to Tom and Jean Waaland. She graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1958, and matriculated to Wellesley College. She left school to marry the love of her life, Lawrence B. Niemann (Larry) in April 1961, and they had 60 glorious years of marriage. Kristine later completed her undergraduate degree at Chatham College in 1980, a testament to her character and to her determination to finish her education. Kris was a devoted mother to her three boys, Scotty, Andrew and Craig and a loving and adoring grandmother to 7 grandchildren: Tom and Alex (Scotty & Elaine), David, Jack and Jessica (Andrew & Jennifer) and Sarah and Will (Craig & Jenny). Kris devoted her life to others, giving freely of her time to family and community organizations. She was involved in the Junior League of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Wellesley Club and the Twentieth Century Club in Pittsburgh. She was a deacon for many years at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. She was a beloved volunteer at the Cooper Siegel Community Library where she spent countless hours making children smile as the “hat lady.” She had a gift to make people smile and brought joy wherever she went.
Kris was a passionate collector whether it was giraffes of all shapes and sizes or crazy hats she would wear to the library. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and would say “tusen takk” to all her friends and family who made her life so enjoyable. She was fond of telling you that she loved you a “million-skillion.” She had a gift for noticing and appreciating the everyday miracles around us, whether it was an interesting spider web, a beautiful flower, a butterfly or a unique cloud in the sky. She was fond of all animals, but cats, in particular, were her favorite. Her kitties were central to the family gatherings and she took great joy in sharing them with children at their vacation home at Ross Mountain Club – a place that Kris and Larry love dearly. Kris is survived by her beloved husband, Larry, her sisters, Barbara and Karen, and her sons and grandchildren. Her joie de vivre will be carried by all who knew and loved her. A small, private memorial service is scheduled for March 20 at 1:00pm at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church but, due to COVID restrictions, attendance will be limited. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Cooper Siegel Community Library located on Fox Chapel Road in Pittsburgh, PA.

My grandmother was one of the most amazing women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She always brought a smile to my face as a child with her fun hats, cute kitty stories, and as my dad referred to them as "mom-isms" like love you million-skillion. This past summer I had the chance to visit grandma in Pittsburgh and I remember swimming at the pool at ross with her and her always beating me at Rummy 500. I love you grandma you will be in my heart forever.
