Kathleen Winifred Becker
May 16, 1934 – December 16, 2020
Kathleen Winifred Becker, 86, of Greenville, PA (formerly of Pittsburgh), peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 with her husband by her side, of COVID-19, complicated by a long battle with Parkinson’s. Kathy was born on May 16, 1934 to Ellen P. and Lawrence T. Sughrue in Pittsburgh PA. After Kathy graduated from Saint Mary of the Mount High School on June 4, 1952, she pursued a nursing degree at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, and graduated on September 2, 1955. After graduation, she worked as a nurse at Mercy Hospital, and later at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, South Western Health Center, and Blue Cross. For much of her career, Kathy worked in the oncology unit, devoting herself to helping her patients in their fight to defeat cancer. She grew up not far from her future husband, Robert Thomas Becker. Although they knew each other in high school, it wasn't until after Bob got out of the Navy in 1955, that a chance encounter on the street sparked a romance that led to their marriage on August 3, 1957. Bob and Kathy went on to have 4 children, Robert Becker, Michael Becker, Daniel Becker, and Cynthia Benestelli. Kathy retired in 1986 after 30 years of nursing. After retirement, Kathy and Bob spent much of their time at their cabin at Lake Pymatuning, the site of many summer family gatherings. For many years, they wintered in Florida, spending their time golfing, boating, and fishing. Kathy was known for her kindness, generosity and radiant smile. All who knew her took comfort and pleasure in her company. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen P. and Lawrence T. Sughrue and her siblings, Mary Ellen Watterson, Joan Werling, John L. Sughrue, and Barbara Sughrue Lewis. She is survived by her remaining sister Margaret Ruff and her loving husband of 63 years, Robert Becker, her four children, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Due to the pandemic, there will be no in-person services. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please consider a donation to the Parkinson's Foundation (parkinsons.org).
