Jeanne D. Sunderman

Jeanne Duncan Sunderman, 96, of Penn Hills, PA died March 7, 2023. She was born August 5, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA to Adelaide (Schaffer) and Sherman Duncan. A National Honor Society member and graduate of Peabody High School, Jeanne worked for US Steel and volunteered as a spotter with the Aircraft Warning Service during WWII. Jeanne was married for 70 years to Philip V. Sunderman who predeceased her in 2022, at the age of 101. Jeanne had a keen sense of humor and an inquisitive, vibrant soul. A skilled writer, accomplished pianist, consummate host, and instinctive leader, she was the CEO of her family and home. Jeanne found joy in her family and friends, cooking, competitive games, crafts, music, reading, and frequent visits to the Pittsburgh Zoo. She served others as a trained crisis hotline volunteer, a hospital aide, and through various leadership roles at Saint James Episcopal Church. Jeanne is survived by her sons Jeffrey (Deanna) of Volant, PA, Steven (Charlyn) of Folson, CA, and Michael (Julie) of Atlanta, GA. She was the grandmother of six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, with two more great-grandchildren expected in 2023, and Aunt to seven caring nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be interred alongside her husband at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
