William Mayborn TEMPLETON
December 27, 1926 – October 2, 2020
William M. (Bill) Templeton, 93, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family and entered eternal rest on Friday, October 2, 2020. He was born on December 27, 1926 in Olmsted Falls, Ohio to Harry R. and Leta (Mayborn) Templeton. Bill graduated from Lakewood High, and served two years in the Marine Corps.
His military service and employment took him to Jacksonville, FL, Buffalo, NY and eventually Newport, PA. Bill served as sales manager for Vulcan Tools and Snap-On Tools, before starting the Templeton Oil Company, which he ran from 1967 until the early 80s. Bill was elected Prothonotary of Perry County in 1980 and served four terms, ending a distinguished career in public service in 1996.
Bill was an active community member, serving 10 years as a coach for his sons’ Little League teams. He was also instrumental in revitalizing the fields and manage league affairs. He served on Newport’s Borough Council (and for a period as council President).
Active in the Assembly of God, Bill and his wife Sally worked with others to assist in planting the Journey Christian Church in Thompsontown. Bill’s hospitality and genuine concern for others reflected his life committed to Jesus’ teachings on the beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount and the enrichment of the soul through the hymns “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”.
Bill loved watching Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns with his family, enjoyed golfing, gardening, crosswords, reading, vacationing, and spending time with family and friends. He maintained contact with members of the community through daily trips to the Weis Markets. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Sallyann, sons Jim and Tom (Bo); two granddaughters (Ellie and Kate); sisters-in-law, Jeanne and Ruth Templeton. He is preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
The family will be designing a testimonial that celebrates Bill’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute by making checks payable to the Bread of Life Outreach foodbank, 253 North 6th Street, Newport, PA 17074, which serves the Perry County community.
