William James McCartney

William J. McCartney Drum Corps Enthusiast William J. (Bill) McCartney attended his last competition on Sunday February 28, 2021 after falling ill in October of 2020. Born in Pittsburgh in 1948, Bill lived in Camp Hill, PA for almost 30 years. He loved going to Wildwood, NJ and everything Disney. At the age of 12, Bill became a part of the great drum corps family. He was a member of the Vern Acklin Cavaliers, the Los Angeles Chinese while serving in the Navy, the Pittsburgh Rockets, the Reading Buccaneers, the Erie Thunderbirds, the Steel City Ambassadors and the Hawthorne Caballeros, marching and competing for 43 years and making friends and family along the way. In 2010, Bill was inducted as a lifetime member to the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Bill was a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam on the USS Columbus. He was retired from the automotive industry. Bill worked for Edgewater Steel in Pittsburgh, Castle Chemicals in Erie, Broadway Chrysler Plymouth in McKees Rocks, Firestone in Camp Hill, Hoffman Ford in Harrisburg, and was a driver for Enterprise in Harrisburg. Bill is survived by his wife of 30 years, Hillary, and their daughter Morganne and her husband Corey Mease. Bill’s extended family includes his mother-in-law Norma, brother-in-law Greg, his wife Virginia, and their children Mitchell and Caroline as well as the Dreyer, Pielka and Bannon families. A private service at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville PA, will be held at a later time.
