Sylvia K. Camp
February 28, 1936 – September 6, 2020
Sylvia K Camp of Newville, PA, as sharp in intellect as in humor, revered for her lifelong service to her community, and respected by all who knew her, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by her family at the age of 84 on September 6, 2020.
She was valedictorian of her high school class in Wyomissing, PA and attended Drexel University in Philadelphia on a full academic scholarship. She graduated with a BS in Textile Merchandising. She met her future husband Peter E. Camp at Philadelphia’s nondenominational Trinity Club young adults’ group. When Peter became an Episcopal minister, she dedicated her life to the church community.
Her career was marked by exceptional organizational acuity, a knack for people management and a dedication to helping those in need. Professional positions included Assistant Director of Personnel at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Director of Volunteers at the Seamen’s Church Institute, manager of St. Luke’s School’s thrift shop in New York City, and President of the Auxiliary and Hall of Honor recipient at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, NH.
When Sylvia moved to Green Ridge Village in Newville, PA, she continued her generous volunteer work as director of the thrift shop for 20 years, turning it into a successful retail enterprise, consistently donating proceeds to the resident fund for the needy and even making enough money to purchase a shuttle bus for the facility. Over the years, she also served as President and Vice President of the Residents’ Council, appointee to the PHI Chairman’s Circle, volunteer engineer at the Big Spring Model Railroad Museum, head of the “30-Somethings” social group, and member of the community chorus, the Village Aires.
Sylvia was a voracious reader (averaging two books a week), and loved the NY Times crossword puzzle. She was an eternal optimist, and faced the recent challenge of the coronavirus quarantine each day with a favorite verse from Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Predeceased by her devoted husband of 43 years, Peter, her loving parents, Paul and Elsie, and her brother “Sonny”, Sylvia will be greatly missed by her children Susanna, Joanna and husband Jamie, Jonathan and wife Heather; her adoring grandchildren Christiane, Juliet, and Hadley; and her cherished longtime friends Paul, Sally, Bill, Joan, Mary Ann, Gene, and Janet, along with all of her extended community of friends at Greenridge Village.
A private service will be held at a later date. If desired, please send donations to Green Ridge Village, 210 Big Spring Road, Newville, PA 17241 (check payable to Green Ridge Village, on memo line write “Green Ridge Fund in memory of Sylvia Camp”).
