Obituary of Allen Roy Metzger
Memorial Tribute: Allen R. Metzger 11/11/1938 – 3/14/2023 On Wednesday, March 14, 2023, Allen R. Metzger, loving husband and father, passed peacefully at the age of 84 at home in Marysville, Pennsylvania. Allen was born on November 11, 1938 in West Fairview, PA to William H. and Sarah C. (Mowery) Metzger. Allen graduated from Susquenita High School in 1959. He worked a variety of jobs including at (the former) Bodwell & Company, and Noland Company, both in the Central Pennsylvania region. But Allen’s life is best defined by his love of people. Allen volunteered his time and service to innumerable clubs and organizations over the course of his 84 years on Earth. Most notably, Allen volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America from 1981 through 2013, with various troops in a variety of roles, earning his Wood Badge in 1988. Allen served on the Marysville Boro Council from 2006-2018 and was elected to the Board of Trustees at the Summerdale United Methodist Church from 2003-2006. Additionally, at the time of his passing, Allen had served 37 years as a member of the Board of Directors at PCRA. One of Allen’s great loves was roller skating. Allen volunteered his time to serve as a roller skating Coach for local athletes competing in the Special Olympics from 1990-2005. Allen taught hundreds of local children how to roller skate during his 30+ year employment at Olympic Skating Center in Enola, PA. Most weekends, Allen could be found welcoming skaters of all ages to Olympic with big hugs, high fives, a huge smile, and his quick wit. He never met a stranger! Young and old, local or traveler, Allen was genuinely happy to share his joy of skating with all who visited Olympic. Over the course of his years with the Boy Scouts of America, the Special Olympics, Summerdale United Methodist Church, and Olympic Skating Rink, Allen unofficially adopted dozens of kids of all ages. Quick to offer loving guidance to a young person in need, always willing to help an adult make a fresh start, Allen’s heart and his home were always open. He leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of all of those he helped. Allen is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 51 years Mim (Miriam Helman) of Marysville, PA, sons Michael Metzger of Pittsburg, Texas, Anthony (Kristen) Metzger of Norfolk, VA, daughter Nickole (Terry) Noble of Steubenville, OH, and grandchildren Eric Kauffman of Steubenville, OH and Adelaide Metzger of Norfolk, VA. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sarah (Mowery) Metzger, and his five brothers: Lowell, Bill, Christian, Richard, and Barry. The public is invited to a Celebration of Life in Allen’s honor on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at 4:30p.m. at Summerdale United Methodist Church, 203 Second Street, Summerdale, PA. Visitation with the family will be hosted at the church from 3:30-4:30p.m. immediately preceding the service. All of Allen’s friends and family are invited to a light super immediately following the service at Olympic Skating Rink in Enola, PA. Roller skating is encouraged. The family wishes to thank Central Pennsylvania Hospice for their support the final weeks of Allen’s life. Additionally, the family wants to acknowledge the decades of love and friendship Duncan (Mac) and Tammy McArthur shared with Allen. The McArthur family joyfully provided Allen with a roller skating home and in return, a lifelong friendship was established. Allen was a beloved member of their Olympic family, and an unofficial member of the McArthur family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to East Pennsboro E.M.S. at P.O. Box 47, Enola, PA 17025. The family is grateful for the knowledge and caring service by all of those from East Pennsboro E.M.S. who answered calls to the home in recent months.
