Obituary of Mrs. Betty J. Shenk
Betty became an angel in heaven on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the age of 91. Her journey began on December 29, 1931. Her early years were spent with her parents Cresson and Dorothy Levengood and her three brothers Stanley, Stuart and Richard. Betty graduated from Pottstown Senior High School in 1949. She married Richard W. Shenk on February 12, 1950. Richard served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force allowing Betty to travel. She spent 4 years in Germany where she traveled the continent of Europe and 4 years in England from where she toured Scotland and Wales. She also spent 6 months in the Philippines. When stationed in the U.S., Betty lived in North Carolina, Massachusetts, Texas and Washington allowing her to visit all 50 states. Betty and her late husband owned and operated The Swamp Hotel in the 1970’s. She loved to do needlework and travel on bus trips. Her favorite trip was to Branson, Missouri to see Donny O’Donnell in concert. Betty held various administrative and receptionist positions throughout her career, most recently at the Spring St. Senior Center in Boyertown, PA where she was an active member for 15 years. Betty resided as the St. Luke Knolls Senior Living Community in Gilbertsville, Pa for 22 years, where she served as recording secretary for the Board of Directors. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband and a niece. She is survived by four nieces. A celebration of her blessed life will be held at 11 A.M., on Saturday, February 25, 2023. at St. Luke Lutheran Church (35 Wilson Ave, Gilbertsville, PA 19525) where Betty was a devoted and active member. In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made in her memory to St. Luke Lutheran Church (PO Box 338, Gilbertsville, PA 19525) or The Center at Spring Street (often referred to as The Boyertown Senior Center) at 200 West Spring Street, Boyertown, PA 19512. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Shenk family.
