Alice Smith Ralph

On a quiet Monday afternoon Alice Ralph peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus. She was 98.

Born in Canton, OH, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Geneva Smith–the third of their four children.

Alice lived a long life of trust in a faithful God, and was a quiet woman of fervent prayer and great generosity. She lived a subtle life, always willing to help and serve. She lives on in the memories of the many people who were touched by her kindness, her sweet spirit, and her warm smile. To know her was to love her.

Alice’s family was incredibly important to her. She cherished her sons – Ed Ralph and Jim (& Anna) Ralph – always providing them much love, comfort, and support. “Gram” deeply loved and engaged with her grandchildren – Robert Ralph, Lauren & Jesse Eckert, Alicia & Daniel Heetderks, Emily & Ryan Ralph Servant, and Zachary & Jillian Ralph. She unreservedly delighted in her great-grandchildren – Irie, Alisa, Kalina, Maggie, Chloe, Alanna, Micah, Cadi, Logan, and Taylor.

Alice also loved reading, often staying up into the wee hours to read “just one more chapter.” Until age 90 she could be found working in the flower beds – with “just one more section” of weeds to tame. She was an avid baseball and football fan, and until her death could be heard to yell at the television over a “bad” call. She especially loved children, and she never met a baby or toddler who could resist her charms.

When Alice retired from caregiving roles and her work at Baxter Elementary School in Canton, she landed at Light and Life Free Methodist Community in Lakeland, FL. She flourished as she lived and served there! She found friends who loved and enjoyed her. There were so many flower beds that needed beautifying. And there was a library that needed tending. (She was so proud of that library and gave tours to all her visitors.)

She lived a life of love and grace, and showed us that it’s always a good time to say, “I love you.” Farewell, for now, to our precious Mom/Gram/Alice!

Family will gather to memorialize her at a future date.
