Roy Edwin Wootton passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at the age of 95. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Platt Wootton and was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Rosemary. He is survived by his children: Terence Wootton of Lehigh Acres, FL; Barbara Milian (Juan) of Rutland Town, Vermont; and Joanna Newlin (Josh) of Glenshaw, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Mario, Maria, Jack, Ben, and Connor. His first great-grandchild, Logan, was born on May 3, 2025—just two days after Roy’s passing.
Roy was born in Croydon, England, and grew up in London during World War II. While many children were evacuated from the city, his family allowed him to stay. He often recalled watching bombers fly overhead from his third-floor window, describing it as one of the most exciting times in his life.
Always fascinated by science, Roy earned a degree in physics from the University of London in 1951. After working in England for 20 years, he was recruited to work in California, eventually settling in Pittsburgh, where he spent the majority of his career at Westinghouse Research and Development in Churchill. During his time there, he was awarded multiple patents for his work in electrical engineering.
In his 50s, Roy fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a pilot. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with computers, and traveling the world. At age 80, he joined a bicycle tour of Ireland, which he later admitted was “a bit difficult.” Roy truly embodied the spirit of a lifelong learner.
A private Celebration of Life will be held by the family this summer, at a date to be determined.
