Adel M. Fougnies, 77, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Richard Thomas; and her loving parents, Leon and Catherine (Zorzi) Fougnies. Adel is survived by her two sons, Kenneth Miller of Pittsburgh, and Aaron (Katherine) Miller of Boston, Massachusetts; three adoring grandchildren, George, Annie and Grace Miller; her sister, Annette Fougnies (Petros Delatolas); niece, Katerina Delatola (Argiris Alevras); and nephew, Nikiforos Delatolas (Caitlin Fennerty).
Adel traveled to all seven continents and cultivated in her children and grandchildren endless curiosity and a love of travel. She truly was a citizen of the world. Adel was also an inspired educator and reading specialist who spent over 30 years teaching thousands of students to read, write, express their ideas artfully, and think critically. Adel retired after decades of service with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, lastly at Rogers Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Together with her husband, Richard, Adel spent her retirement years traveling, parenting and grandparenting joyfully, and enjoying time with dear friends on their beloved North Side of Pittsburgh.
Donations may be made in Adel’s name to City of Asylum (cityofasylum.org/donate), a non-profit organization based on Pittsburgh’s North Side that helps writers exiled from their native countries, and where Adel and Richard volunteered passionately.
Friends and family are welcomed to a memorial service, jazz celebration and brunch honoring Adel’s life on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 9:30 AM at City of Asylum’s Alphabet City, 40 W. North Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
